In some ways I was lucky or at least I think I was, In Scotland the Tawse was used in schools and homes, I attended a Catholic all girls convent taught only by nuns and they didn't use the Tawse but an old plimsoll was used, if you received the plimsoll at school you were given a note for your parents who more than likely give you another spanking. My neighbours daughter who I grew up and we played together and shared some of our tears together received the Tawse on her hands which was I think more usual, and then the strap on her backside. My parents never gave me anything on the hands, she said it was extremely painful. I used to think it wouldn't hurt her any way as much as it hurt me. Strange what ideas children have. She was a plump girl and I was very tiny so I used to tell her that it would hurt my bottom more.
A couple of instances of the Tawse.
I can remember coming back from church and I had fidgeted and was rude to my parents walking home. My mother told my father that a trip over the sofa was due, by the time I was through the front door I was pleading, but it didn't do me any good on that occasion. I was sent upstairs to fetch the Tawse told to fold my skirt and pants neatly and take up position over the sofa arm, My father would tilt me forward so my bottom was nice and high and my head well down. I hadn't received one stroke and I was crying, my father never gave me the full force, but I was left bawling my eyes out and I can assure you that it started with a pale little bottom and six strokes left a very red painful bottom including the cleft. My father would tell me to go to my room and not to touch my bottom or rub it.
